Misty Mountain Location
Misty Mountain is approximately halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and is
best accessed through the town of Kempsey. From Kempsey, the drive to the
retreat is 100 kilometres on one of the most beautiful drives in
Australia. After leaving the busy Pacific Highway and the last major fuel
stop of Kempsey, the road meanders through 60 kilometres of the small towns
Willawarrin and Bellbrook, providing you with grand vistas of the mighty
Macleay River. The Macleay Valley offers a rich history in aboriginal
culture and is one of the last coastal valleys that remains undeveloped in
NSW.
After leaving the bitumen, there are another 40 kilometres of unsealed
road which take you through the Five Day Creek Valley and transport you
back in time as you let your imagination grasp hold of the history of this
Valley. Still to be seen are stockmen on their horses as they watch their
cattle grazing between the pristine creeks, and then past the
still-standing homestead of 'Salt-Bush Bill', the character who inspired
Joliffe's cartoons.
The last ten kilometres are breathtaking to say the least as the
rainforest closes in and as you venture through crystal clear creeks and
up majestic mountains to finally arrive at the magnificent hideaway called
Misty Mountain.
How to Get Here
From Sydney or Melbourne, air services are offered by QANTAS and Virgin Blue to
Coffs Harbour. From here you transfer to the helicopter and have a spectacular
flight of approximately 20 minutes to your wilderness hideaway at Misty Mountain.
At the end of your program you are then returned to Coffs Harbour for your
flight home.
Virgin Blue offer a direct flight from Melbourne to Coffs
Harbour each Saturday afternoon. This is a great way to come from Melbourne. Get
a motel and enjoy a Saturday night in beautiful Coffs Harbour followed by a
morning helicopter flight to Misty Mountain.
For road transfers, Kempsey has a
train station with services from Brisbane and Sydney as well as bus services
with the major bus lines. Our courtesy bus will meet you at the train or bus terminus to take you to Misty Mountain.
If you choose to come in your own four wheel
drive vehicle, you then can enjoy taking a leisurely drive through spectacular
scenery and the added adventure of being able to explore the mountains on
designated four wheel drive tracks at Misty Mountain and in the area.
